Not Your Mom’s Mary Kay – Fierce Face Fridays

On Fierce Face Friday my aim is to share with you a makeup or skin care item(s), technique, tip, or tool that makes me feel gorgeous. I hope these little nuggets will inspire you to try something new or tell me about something that works for you. Do you agree? Disagree? Sound off in the comments below. If you have a Fierce Face topic you’d like me to cover, feel free to reach to me directly and I will make every attempt to feature that topic in a future post.

A few weeks ago, a close friend introduced me to the fantastic Kristen, who is a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. Kristen was looking for someone to try out some Mary Kay offerings and my friend recommended she and I speak. The next thing I knew, I was combing through the Mary Kay catalog and picking out some lip products. Kristen generously provided these for my review and I am so pleased I got to try these. Regardless of how the products came to me, all opinions are my own.

I’ll be the first to admit that when I think of Mary Kay I don’t usually consider myself to be the target market. For some reason, I associate it with my Mom (sorry Mom, you’re fabulous!). However, I have never met makeup I don’t want to try. Recently, while watching unboxing videos, I also noticed Glossy Box had Mary Kay Timewise skin care products in their March 2017 subscription box and reviewers were raving about the samples. Plus, I used and loved Mary Kay in my college years and I know many people swear by their products. The kind of loyalty the brand engenders is impressive. Ultimately I felt I owed it to myself and to my readers to see what’s new.

Mary Kay Satin Lips Shea Sugar Scrub

Mary Kay Satin Lips Shea Sugar Scrub

The first product I wanted to try, and one that Kristen highly recommended, is the Satin Lips Shea Sugar Scrub. I do a lip scrub every morning and usually use one by ELF. Daily use means I go through them pretty fast and am always on the lookout for something that works as well and maybe lasts a bit longer. The Mary Kay scrub is quite good.

I like the tube it comes in as I am able to take a bit out with my finger with minimal mess. The scrub has very fine sugar crystals, probably the finest in a lip scrub I have found. If you are someone who doesn’t like to mercilessly scrub the first layer of skin from your lips, this is for you. This product provides a light exfoliation, perfect for every day. If your lips are super dry and flaky, you might want something a bit harsher. Then again, if you use this daily with a good lip balm, you might never get to that point.

The Satin Lips scrub has shea butter and sunflower oil, which provide great nourishment, leaving a light layer of moisture on the lips after you remove it. It has a very light scent that is citrusy. While the package notes a green tea scent, I don’t really get that in the flavor or the smell. There is a very slight lime and sugar taste that is inoffensive and quite nice. If you don’t currently use a lip scrub and want to add one to your skincare routine, this is a great product to try. It retails for $12, and there are 3 ounces of product, which is very generous as you don’t need to use much. This will last awhile, even with daily use.

Mary Kay Satin Lips Scrub:

Pros:

  • Virtually scent and taste free
  • Contains intense moisturizing ingredients
  • Mess free application
  • Generous portion of product
  • Gentle enough for daily use

Cons:

  • Fine grains may not be a harsh enough exfoliant for very dry lips
  • Leaves a layer of product after removal that may not be the best base for a liquid lip

Mary Kay Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick

Mary Kay Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick

Next, I had to try one of their lipsticks and was excited to see they had a matte offering! I got the
Mary Kay Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick in Rich Truffle. I LOVE this lipstick. The packaging is gorgeous – some of the prettiest I have seen. It has a clear top so you can look down and see the color. I enjoy taking this out of my bag and putting it on. It is so lovely! You’ll see it featured over in this post as well as my Mishibox Unboxing video over on YouTube (hey, follow me on YouTube!). The packaging is so simple and classic. Nothing like the pink tubes I recall from my youth, which were fine, but this is several steps up.

Love the see-through top!

I love wearing this one! The color is gorgeous. It is a rich, neutral toned brown that reminds me of the fantastic darker nudes of the 90’s (think Cindy Crawford circa 1995) but is really wearable for most skin tones. The lipstick glides on effortlessly with no tugging and applies in one layer to a nicely opaque finish.

Semi-matte is a great description of the finish. The finish isn’t glossy at all but it doesn’t have a dry or super matte look. It is perfect for someone who wants to try a matte lipstick or who loves the look but doesn’t love the moisture sapping properties of some very matte lipsticks. This is also a matte I recommend for more mature lip as it is unlikely to bleed into fine lines or cling to dry patches. It also is a great daily wear lipstick for any age. Therefore, I recommend this for everyone.

It feels FANTASTIC on the lips and wears pretty well. I won’t lie, it doesn’t have the staying power of some other lipsticks. It probably wouldn’t be my first pick for a day when I wouldn’t have time to touch up. You might get more long lasting wear by using a matching lip liner, something to try next time. But that doesn’t take away from how absolutely stunning this looks on. According to the Mary Kay website, the lipstick contains “optical enhancers” which create a softer effect. I buy that. Sadly, this formula only comes in eight colors, but I am hoping they release more soon.

Mary Kay Satin Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick in Rich Truffle:

Pros:

  • Light scent that is barely noticeable
  • Very comfortable to wear and true to tube color
  • Glides on easily
  • Stays put with no feathering or bleeding into fine lines

Cons:

  • Needs reapplication throughout the day
  • Color range is limited

Mary Kay Glossy Lip Oil

Mary Kay Glossy Lip Oil

Last but not least I tried the Mary Kay Glossy Lip Oil (limited edition) in Brilliant Violet. I honestly cannot even type this without getting excited; I love, love, love this product. Admittedly, I wore it on a day when my lips needed a break from the liquid lips I subject them to on a daily basis. But that doesn’t explain why my whole face lit up the second I put it on. This lip oil is stunning.

Lip oil is a product I am seeing pop up more lately. They provide intense moisture with just a kiss of color. Purportedly, many have anti-aging properties (something I appreciate). This is the first one I have tried and if this is what lip oils bring to the table, I need more of them.

The Mary Kay lip oil is easy to apply, and I really like the applicator. It has a sponge tip and you squeeze a little product out and swipe it on. You do need to clean it up a bit after a few uses, but it isn’t hard to do. As this isn’t a super pigmented formula, there is no need to be precise. You can do this without looking. It’s awesome. The formula feels really nice. It isn’t sticky at all and has a slight sweet but not heavy scent. I always apply lipstick last and it finished my face perfectly. As soon as I had this on, my face just glowed. I don’t know how it does that but it did for me.

Since this is a glossy oil, it doesn’t last forever. However, I didn’t need to apply for a few hours, which is isn’t bad. Because it is so easy to apply, it didn’t bother me at all. I felt really pretty wearing the Mary Kay Glossy Lip Oil and I feel the violet tint was perfect for me. I am on board with the lip oil trend.

I loved it so much I made a collage!

I am sad to say while writing this post, this product (was was admittedly a limited edition) has been discontinued. Here’s hoping they bring it, or something similar back. If you want it (and you should) contact Kristen or your favorite consultant to see if they can find it for you. I imagine there must be some out there.

Mary Kay Satin Glossy Lip Oil in Brilliant Violet:

Pros:

  • Easy to use applicator
  • Super moisturizing and a real treat for your lips
  • Skin brightening colors that make your whole face light up
  • Gorgeous sheer colors

Cons:

  • No longer available for order
  • The applicator needs frequent cleaning

I had so much fun trying out these Mary Kay products and cannot thank Kristen enough for her offer to gives these products a spin. Mary Kay is putting out some quality stuff and I am excited to try more. They certainly have an eye to a classic style, which is always in fashion. The packaging is thoughtfully created and the quality of the products is fantastic. I recommend all of these and hope you’ll consider reaching out to Kristen if you want to order any of these products or get some advice on what might work for you!
